People Make Place
Reflection | Zachary Van TolBefore our trip, my expectations exclusively encompassed the ecological awe of this remote part of the world. However, as the weeks progressed, I learned the importance of humans in an environmental narrative; I came to grasp the inextricable link between humans and nature. In a multitude of ways—science, ecotourism, conservation, resource extraction, and others—Antarctica is much of what it is due to the value we prescribe it. My experiences with others on the ship brought to light the individualized nature of visiting the Antarctic; everyone has their “why.” This human-nature linkage complicates cooperative stewardship: People project their experiences onto places, creating a unique viewing lens that is impossible for others to comprehend. Conversely, this complication—the uniqueness of the individual—makes the human experience beautiful.
